About the Fairgrounds
The San Juan County Fairgrounds house the County Fair; host programming from 4-H and Island Rec; and accommodate a wide range of special events. The Fairgrounds, which operate year-round, have facilities for the fair, public-use rental facilities, a family park and skate park, group camping, and RV sites. The fairgrounds are managed by a full-time Fair & Events Manager, a Grounds/Facilities Worker, a part-time Program Coordinator, and several seasonal and short-term staff members.
2018 Master Plan
The San Juan County Fairgrounds Master Plan, which was last updated in 2012, provides a roadmap for developing and operating the fairgrounds in a manner that is responsive to County residents and focuses on long-term economic sustainability. Beginning in summer 2018, a new planning process is underway to answer several important questions, including:
- What are the existing conditions on the site?
- How should the fairgrounds be improved?
- What are the historical and cultural significance of the fairgrounds to County residents?
- What kinds of new or expanded uses should be considered?
- How should recommended improvements be implemented and funded?

Thank you for your input! The public comment period on the draft was held from the end of 2018 to January 31, 2019. While individual comments were not replied to directly, all comments are being taken into consideration during the development of the final plan.
Edits have been made to the first draft that incorporate community and County Council input. Some notable changes are: a reorganization of the document to be more easily read; a greater emphasis on describing the Fairgrounds’ vision and role in the community; and more detailed analysis and descriptions of project proposals. The final document will be presented to the County Council for approval in the coming months.
