Permits Administered by Public Works
County Road Right of Way Permits
Right of Way Permits are required for the following:
- Construction of roads, driveways, field access or other vehicular access to a County road.
- Temporary driveway access onto a County Road, for activities such as construction or logging.
- Installation of utilities or other permanent fixtures in the County road right of way.

Road Closures
County road closures must be approved by the County Engineer &/or County Council, as follows:
- A County Council Resolution is required if any of the following conditions apply:
- Emergency services will be disrupted requiring special accommodations, OR
- Commercial or residential access will be prohibited, OR
- Local access delays may exceed 30 minutes, OR
- Special events over 8 hours
- A Right of Way permit may be issued for all other road-closing activities.

Applications & Fees
- Requests may be made in writing, addressed to San Juan County Engineer, and submitted by email or letter.
- Application fee is $100.
Utility Franchises
Franchise Agreements are required for utility providers or agencies with 500 feet or greater of utility installations in the County Road Right of Way.

- Application fee is $1500; $250 annual renewal
Oversized Vehicle / Moving Permits
Oversized Vehicle/Moving Permits are required for travel on a County road, for loads exceeding any of these dimensions: Width 8.5 feet, Length 14 feet, Height 40 feet.
