Building Permit Applications

All Building permits are now accepted online via our permit portal (SmartGov) and need to be submitted electronically. We no longer accept paper plans or applications.  See instructions for how to organize and save your permit documents for uploading.

We are in the process of updating our permit applications, thank you for your patience.

The "Combined Forms" packets are comprehensive and may include forms that will not be needed. For example, if there is no structure on the property that you wish to remove, you will not need to submit a Demolition Application. However, the Addressing Verification Form for E-911 purposes and the Right of Way Review Form for Public Works to verify sight distances are ALWAYS REQUIRED. 

Additionally, note that septic and water applications must be submitted directly to the Health Department, with the appropriate fee, at PO Box 607, Friday Harbor, WA 98250 AND a receipt of submission included with your building application. If you have questions regarding this, contact the Health Department at 360-378-4474.


Plan review time is about 15-20 weeks. Permit volumes and Furlough days for employees have affected turn around times for plan review, please be patient. Thank you for understanding.
